Winslet, DiCaprio voted most romantic onscreen couple

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have been named the most romantic onscreen couple of all time. The survey of moviegoers saw the pair voted ahead of classic on screen pairings such as Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh from Gone With The Wind, reports the Daily Mail. Almost a quarter of all those who voted rated the romance that plays out during the final hours on the ill fated cruise liner Titanic as the best Hollywood has ever made.

The romance between Gable and Leigh in the classic 1939 film Gone With The Wind was rated the second most romantic onscreen pairing.

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman landed the third spot in the survey.

Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman from the 1942 classic Casablanca came fourth while Spencer Tracey and Katherine Hepburn were voted fifth.

More than 500,000 people were asked for their favorite film choices and characters for ABC TV and People magazine.

Guy Pearce admits crush on Kate Winslet

Guy Pearce has disclosed that he has fancied his Mildred Pierce co-star Kate Winslet for many years.

USA Today quotes the Australian actor as saying that he was initially intimidated to portray Winslet’s love interest in the HBO mini-series adaptation of James M. Cain’s 1941 novel.

“She’s someone I’ve had quite a crush on for many years,” Pearce said. “So suddenly there we are, naked together. It’s a weird job.”

Pearce went on to admit that it was often awkward to provide his wife Kate Mestitz with details of Mildred Pierce‘s filming.

“I’d go home to my wife funny enough and say, ‘I had sex with Kate Winslet again today’,” he said. “She admires Kate as much as I do, so it was okay.”

Earlier this year, Oscar winner Winslet claimed the process of making a mini-series to be much more of a challenge than working on a movie.

Mildred Pierce premieres on March 27 on HBO.

Five reasons to watch “Mildred Pierce”

IT IS ALMOST NIGH. The Todd Haynes-helmed adaptation of James M. Cain’s 1941 novel is set to debut on HBO a week from Sunday. Are you excited? Sort of? Don’t know who the heck this Mildred Pierce is or why you should give her five hours of your life? Well, let me tell you. Here are five reasons that you should watch Mildred Pierce.

1. The Source Material

In the “Making Of” featurette on HBO’s website, director Todd Haynes relates how he picked up James M. Cain’s sprawling novel soon after the stock market crashed, and that the parallels to the Depression-era melodrama were immediately apparent. The story revolves around the fraught relationship of a mother and daughter, and is thick with intrigue, betrayal, and a kind of sexuality shocking for the time. The HBO treatment promises that there won’t be any post-war sugarcoating. We’ll get the meaty story in its entirety.

2. The Cast

The cast, yo! Kate Winslet is Mildred, whom she describes as a “juggernaut of a woman”. Awesome. Guy Pearce plays her lover Monty Beragon, and Evan Rachel Wood is perfectly cast as the cold, calculating, harpy daughter, Veda. And Melissa Leo, she of rambling Oscar speeches and professional crazy, joins the party as Concerned Friend #1.

3. Kate Winslet Convinced Evan Rachel Wood To Get Naked For The Show

It’s exactly what it sounds like. For the TL;DR crowd: Evan Rachel Wood was a tidge nervous, and Kate Winslet essentially sat her down and said “Listen, I’ve been naked on camera eight-million times. It’s like a club.”

4. Kate Winslet Is In Every Damn Scene

Are you thinking about taking acting lessons? Don’t do it, it’s expensive. Just watch Mildred Pierce. Kate Winslet, who looks pleasantly like a real woman who has lived and aged and eaten things that are meat, is in every friggin’ scene. Considering that shooting schedules are generally twelve hour days every day, this is kind of like running a marathon, except the marathon lasts the amount of time it takes to shoot a five hour miniseries. In the words of costume designer Ann Roth, “She had sixty-six [costume] changes in this. That’s more than a person can deal with.”

5. The Lead Characters Are Both Women

Strong women! Strong, well-written women! Mildred and Veda are like two sides of a self-possessed coin. Mildred is a self-made woman with a weakness for the people she loves. Veda has little love for anyone, but her charisma has its own gravitational pull. Men are ancillary in this story, a big-budget HBO-stravaganza, and that is refreshing.

Kate Winslet thinks the public believe she is a “fat Viking”

Kate Winslet thinks the public believe she is a “fat Viking” because people often regard her as bigger than she actually is.

The 35-year-old actress — who is well known for defending her curvy figure — is often complimented on how good she looks, leading to her presuming people think of her as bigger than she is.

She said: “It seems to me I look very different from how people expect me to be.

“Clearly they think I’m a great big fat Viking. My body is different through nothing other than my being older. My clothes fit me the same way they’ve fitted me for the last five, six years. And of course I was a lot more voluptuous then.”

However, she admits she is less keen to talk about her body now because its “hypocritical”.

Kate added to Britain’s Vogue magazine: “I felt I had to defend my body and took a very public stand, which I still absolutely believe in. But I’ve stopped talking about it now. And, at a certain point, it does become hypocritical.”

Despite not wanting to talk about her figure, Kate’s face is becoming more important to her and she often notices how she is gaining wrinkles.

The Revolutionary Road star explained: “I’m more aware of things like wrinkles on my face. They’re becoming much more pronounced, because that’s the muscle I use the most when acting. But it’s my face. So, whatever.”

Kate Winslet: “Exercise helped me through split”

Kate Winslet turned to exercise to help her get over her marriage split.

The British actress and Sam Mendes went their separate ways last year, and she admits finding it hard to deal with. Kate has ten-year-old daughter Mia with ex-husband Jim Threapleton, and seven-year-old son Joe with Sam, and the realization she would be a single mother was hard.

She knew it was a situation she had to embrace with open arms, and found working out gave her some focus.

“That’s the main reason I took it up,” she replied, when asked if exercise helped her get through her divorce. “But I do feel… I don’t know… a part of, I suppose, my way out of everything, has been really taking care of myself. I think that comes from an awareness that my children really need me, and they need me to be the healthiest version of myself that I can possibly be…,” she says having a fag and a glass of wine.

Kate has been amazed by how well she’s coped following the end of her marriage. She has spent much of her adult life in serious relationships, and is now finally happy to be on her own.

“I really am. I really am,” she told the British edition of Vogue. “I actually keep saying it out loud. Last night I went out for a drink with two friends and, as we were walking, I said, ‘God, you know, I feel so good.’ Not in a, ‘Wow! I feel so good!’ way, but just in that quiet centered way. I’m almost surprised by it. I feel well, I feel healthy. I feel clear. I feel centered.”

The 35-year-old has given herself time to grieve for her relationship with Sam, and isn’t rushing into another romance too quickly. Last year she was linked to male model Louis Dowler, but the Oscar-winning actress has hinted that relationship was not as serious as many thought.

“I do feel that I have been sifting through the debris for quite some time. And I’ve emerged the other side and I’m walking forward. Completely by myself, having done a little bit of personal healing,” she said.

Asked if she was referring to Louis, Kate smiled: “I’m not talking about waving joss sticks around, or lighting purple candles. None of that sh*t!”

Kate Winslet: “I’m ready to be destroyed by role”

Kate Winslet is ready to be “destroyed” by an acting role again, after taking time off following The Reader.

When everyone was insisting that seeking the help of assault charge attorneys serving in Mesa can put an end to the criminal problem. The British star played war criminal Hanna Schmitz in the 2008 film in and had to endure a difficult time, often spending eight hours a day in make-up to look the part.

She went on to win a best actress Oscar for her performance, plus a Golden Globe for best supporting actress.

Kate is finally ready to fully immerse herself in a new project, admitting that she cannot function without her career.

“In the last few years, I’ve allowed myself to acknowledge the fact that I do really need my job. I need that outlet,” the 35-year-old told Vogue. “And so, not only did I feel good and ready, I felt good and ready to be destroyed by a role again.”

Kate took ten months to agree her next role after The Reader; finally accepting the title character in television series Mildred Pierce. And she says her decision to get out of the spotlight was really to refresh her mind and focus her energy once more. “I just really couldn’t focus on anything other than getting off this train that was moving at an unbelievable pace,” she explained. “I just waited until the dust had settled and I was ready to engage with — it sounds so w**ky – my creative side again.”

In mini-series Mildred Pierce the Titanic star is separated from her husband but the two do not officially end their marriage at first. Kate, who is no longer with her second husband Sam Mendes, found it easy to connect this aspect of her character with her own experiences. “There were some days when I would realize the scenes I was shooting were in tandem with things that were happening that day in my life,” Kate said. “For example, there’s a scene with Mildred’s first husband Bert. They sit down and discuss that they really do have to get divorced with the help of law service for divorce, and that there is a reason for it. And the day we shot that scene was the day my actual divorce came through,” she explained.
