Kate Winslet documentary brings camera crew to Redroofs

Canadian documentary-makers have captured the talents of Redroofs Theatre School students on film as part of a profile on its most famous former student.

Production company A+E rolled into town last week as part of a programme being prepared on the stellar career of Kate Winslet.

Winslet, recognized as a genuine Hollywood A-lister after landing starring roles in blockbusters including Titanic, spent five years learning her trade at Redroofs.

While at the school in Bath Road, Maidenhead, the actress appeared on stage in Peter Pan and Adrian Mole, before going on to play Juliet Hulme in Heavenly Creatures.

Director of Redroofs, and Winslet’s ex teacher, Carolyn Mayling said: “The children are delighted to be in the documentary.

“Knowing that Kate Winslet was a ex-pupil at Redroofs is really inspiring for them. The young girls often ask me ‘was Kate actually in this room?’.”

The documentary on Kate Winslet’s life will be aired in Canada on completion, on channel CTV.

“Titanic” Hug Voted Movie Favorite

Actors Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s embrace as the ill-fated Titanic struck an iceberg has been voted the Best Movie Hug Ever.
The desperate clinch shared by the doomed lovers in the 1997 blockbuster narrowly beat the final hug shared by Baby and Johnny in 1987’s Dirty Dancing as well as Elliot’s tight grasp on the incubator holding his extra-terrestrial friend in the 1982 movie E.T.
Bridget Jones’ Diary was voted fourth place for Bridget and Mark Darcy’s squeeze in the snow, with ex-convicts Andy and Red’s hug in the final scene of The Shawshank Redemption rounding out the top five.

More info on “The Reader”

Kate Winslet has signed on to replace Nicole Kidman for the lead role in the Weinstein Co.’s Stephen Daldry film The Reader. Kidman left the project on Monday and cited her pregnancy as the reason for dropping out of the picture.Variety reported the film was set to start shooting in late 2007 in Berlin and the eastern city of Goerlitz. Filming with Kidman (who had yet to shoot any scenes in the film) was scheduled to start this month. News started circulating on Tuesday that Winslet had been chosen to take over the Kidman role and would star opposite Ralph Fiennes and David Kross.

The film’s story unfolds against the landscape of post-war Germany and follows fifteen-year-old Michael Berg who is rescued by Hanna, a woman twice his age, when he falls ill on the way home.

The pair have passionate affair until she disappears one day. He next sees her when he is a young law student, and she is on trial for a hideous crime. Michael gradually realizes that Hanna may be guarding a secret she considers more shameful than murder.

Winslet was the first choice for the film, but was unable to take the part due to a schedule conflict with Revolutionary Road – which reteams her with Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio and was directed by Winslet’s husband Sam Mendes. Kidman (who recently confirmed she is expecting a baby with husband Keith Urban) took the role after the filmmakers built in a break in shooting to accommodate her schedule with the Baz Luhrmann-directed Australia – which had a longer production than expected. Kidman stars in that film with Hugh Jackman.

Producing duties on The Reader are being handled by Mirage Prods. partners Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella. The film has a budget of E2.8 million ($4.1 million) made up from regional and federal film subsidies in Germany. It has been pre-sold to a number of foreign distributors, including Senator Film for Germany and Austria, Ascot Elite Entertainment for Switzerland and Odeon in Greece.

Mandy Moore’s crush on Winslet

Mandy Moore is keen to lock lips with British actress Kate Winslet on the big screen — because the Titanic actress is the only female Moore the pop star would share a love scene with.
Moore, who is fast becoming a big screen star herself after a string of acclaimed movies, is a longtime fan of Winslet’s, and would be thrilled to star in a film with her.
And she’d even consider a kissing scene — or more.
She says, “I think she is just beautiful and she’s a phenomenal actress.”

Gandolfini, Winslet and Turturro — on making a musical

Though he cuts a swath quite different from that of your average musical-theater star, James Gandolfini worked hard to improve his hoofing skills for his new movie, Romance & Cigarettes.

But as he’ll happily tell you, it wasn’t easy.

“I would leave the dance lessons going: ‘Holy Christ, I’m so incredibly bad at this,’ ” said the former star of “The Sopranos.” “It was like me doing algebra or something. I had no clue about any of this.”

Judging by the film, he had a good teacher.
