Actress Kate Winslet goes platinum blonde for Vogue’s UK April 2011 edition.

In the intimate interview and accompanying shoot by Mario Testino, Kate Winslet talks about being single and what’s next in her career and personal life.

In Solo Act tells Jo Ellison about starting again following her split from husband Sam Mendes.

She said: “It’s empowering…

“Experiencing those moments of being alone… is a very, very weird flooring and exposing position to be in when you’re just not used to it. And it’s not just being in a relationship.

“It’s also the fact that I grew up in a family full of people.”

Kate is currently filming Carnage where she plays Nancy in the comedy alongside Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly.

Kate Winslet turned to exercise to help her get over her marriage split.

The British actress and Sam Mendes went their separate ways last year, and she admits finding it hard to deal with. Kate has ten-year-old daughter Mia with ex-husband Jim Threapleton, and seven-year-old son Joe with Sam, and the realization she would be a single mother was hard.

She knew it was a situation she had to embrace with open arms, and found working out gave her some focus.

“That’s the main reason I took it up,” she replied, when asked if exercise helped her get through her divorce. “But I do feel… I don’t know… a part of, I suppose, my way out of everything, has been really taking care of myself. I think that comes from an awareness that my children really need me, and they need me to be the healthiest version of myself that I can possibly be…,” she says having a fag and a glass of wine.

Kate has been amazed by how well she’s coped following the end of her marriage. She has spent much of her adult life in serious relationships, and is now finally happy to be on her own.

“I really am. I really am,” she told the British edition of Vogue. “I actually keep saying it out loud. Last night I went out for a drink with two friends and, as we were walking, I said, ‘God, you know, I feel so good.’ Not in a, ‘Wow! I feel so good!’ way, but just in that quiet centered way. I’m almost surprised by it. I feel well, I feel healthy. I feel clear. I feel centered.”

The 35-year-old has given herself time to grieve for her relationship with Sam, and isn’t rushing into another romance too quickly. Last year she was linked to male model Louis Dowler, but the Oscar-winning actress has hinted that relationship was not as serious as many thought.

“I do feel that I have been sifting through the debris for quite some time. And I’ve emerged the other side and I’m walking forward. Completely by myself, having done a little bit of personal healing,” she said.

Asked if she was referring to Louis, Kate smiled: “I’m not talking about waving joss sticks around, or lighting purple candles. None of that sh*t!”

And she says her decision to get out of the spotlight was really to refresh her mind and focus her energy once more. “I just really couldn’t focus on anything other than getting off this train that was moving at an unbelievable pace,” she explained. “I just waited until the dust had settled and I was ready to engage with — it sounds so w**ky – my creative side again.”

In mini-series Mildred Pierce the Titanic star is separated from her husband but the two do not officially end their marriage at first. Kate, who is no longer with her second husband Sam Mendes, found it easy to connect this aspect of her character with her own experiences. “There were some days when I would realize the scenes I was shooting were in tandem with things that were happening that day in my life,” Kate said. “For example, there’s a scene with Mildred’s first husband Bert. They sit down and discuss that they really do have to get divorced with the help of law service for divorce, and that there is a reason for it. And the day we shot that scene was the day my actual divorce came through,” she explained.

Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet has said that her close friend Leonardo DiCaprio has been her “rock” over the years since they starred together as a romantic pair in blockbuster Titanic.

The 35-year-old star has praised DiCaprio for supporting her through her recent split from her husband Sam Mendes.

Winslet said that friendship between a man and a woman usually begins with a sexual undercurrent, but her and DiCaprio’s has always been platonic, based on mutual respect and shared experiences, reported Vogue magazine.

“He knows me better than anyone else in the world.
Lots of male friendships begin as a cheeky snog. Or a little undercurrent of flirtation. But Leo and I? No. He’s my rock. I don’t know what the fuck I would have done if I hadn’t had him,” said Winslet.

Besides the 1997 multiple Oscar-winning movie, the duo also paired up in 2008’s Revolutionary Road.

The 36-year-old actor believes the pair are so close because they have “grown up together” and always been there for each other.

“We literally grew up together. And in every major life event we”ve been there as a support mechanism for each other,” said DiCaprio.

35-year-old Winslet is probably best known for her role as Rose in the 1997 film Titanic. Along with her new look, she also discusses the split between her and her husband of 8 years, 45-year-old Sam Mendes. The two split last year.

Mendes is a director of movies such as American Beauty. He and Winslet were married in 2003 and have a 7-year-old son named Joe. Winslet also has a 10-year-old daughter, Mia, from her previous marriage to assistant director Jim Threapleton.

The Titanic star announced the end of her relationship with the filmmaker, her second husband, last March after nearly seven years of wedlock.

Winslet, who was linked to male model Louis Dowler after the separation, has now broken her silence about the breakdown of her marriage to Mendes, revealing she is embracing life as a single mum-of-two.

She tells Vogue magazine, “(It’s an) empowering thing… Experiencing those moments of being alone… is a very, very weird flooring and exposing position to be in when you’re just not used to it. And it’s not just being in a relationship. It’s also the fact that I grew up in a family full of people. I’ve never been lonely. And with (kids) Mia and Joe that remains the case.

“But to be in this place now where I can say I really like this space. I really need to not have anyone around. It’s a surprise to discover that I like being on my own.”

Winslet was previously married to Jim Threapleton, her daughter Mia’s dad, but they divorced in 2001.
