Kate Winslet Talks About Life, Love and Leo

It’s the reunion we’ve all been waiting for: Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio together again.

“You know we’re twelve years older than we were back then.” Kate tells momlogic, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at her. Even a dozen years after she starred in Titanic, Kate still looks just as she did when she played Leo’s tragic lover on screen — plus or minus a few laugh lines, of course.

But even after all these years, that infamous chemistry with Leo is still there. This time the Oscar-nominated duo are sharing the big screen in their new film, Revolutionary Road. The film is a haunting look at the life of a 1950s suburban couple. And while Kate first fell in love with the book and relished her role as tortured soul April Wheeler, she tells momlogic that it was the opportunity to work with Leo once again that really made this film a true labor of love. “You know as actors I think we’ve both watched each other grow and change on screen. As friends we’ve gotten closer and closer together. The truth is that we’ve grown up. We’re older; we’re wiser you know hopefully we’re better actors. And I can say that he’s nicer than he was before. He’s funnier than he was before. He’s only changed for the better.”

And so has Kate — with motherhood and family infamously being a top priority in her busy life. In fact, shooting Revolutionary Road was a real family affair. Kate’s husband, Sam Mendes directed the film (yes, even the love scenes with Leo) and Kate’s kids, Mia and Joe, come along as well.

But while other Hollywood moms turn film sets into virtual day care centers, Kate confesses to momlogic that she takes a slightly different approach. “We were able to shoot the movie during the children’s summer vacation from school. We shot the movie up in Darien, Conn., rented a house out there and the children were with us, every day. They went to a local day camp and they did visit the set, but I’m not one of those people who like to bring the children to set every single day. You know, because I can’t concentrate on being a mom — when I’m playing April Wheeler, you can’t do all those things. I can’t hold those two things in my head. I’m not that much of a multi-tasker.”

So, will Kate and Leo reignite their infamous on-screen chemistry? Find out when Revolutionary Road opens on December 26th.

Kate the Fearless

Spend time around Kate Winslet, and the subject of food is bound to come up sooner or later. You may not have known, for instance, that the last job she had before breaking into the movies was behind the counter in a delicatessen. “I made sandwiches. I cut up cheese. I ground coffee,” she says. “I loved it!”

To this day, Winslet likes to unwind in the kitchen. “I do endless chopping and preparing things,” she tells me. “I really find that relaxing. I do a lot of thinking as I am chopping and cooking.” And then there’s the revelation she had a few weekends ago—where else but in a restaurant? Winslet and her husband, director Sam Mendes, had gone out for lunch with their young daughter and son—a relatively rare occasion, the actress insists. “We like them to see those things as a treat, as they should be—and still are to me, actually.” She smiles. “We were having lunch, and I was having a glass of wine and eating bread and putting butter on the bread, and I turned to Sam and said, ‘I am just so happy!’”

Kate’s fury over fake fur rug … that wasn’t

As A staunch anti-fur advocate, Kate Winslet has always been meticulously careful about what she wears – and what she poses with.

So when the Titanic star was asked to drape herself over a luxuriant fur rug for a provocative glossy magazine photoshoot, she was quick to seek reassurances that it was made from artificial fibres.

But now the magazine, Vanity Fair, has been forced to apologise after admitting that the actress had been misled and that the throw was really genuine fox fur.

Does Kate Winslet want an Oscar? ‘You bet your [expletive] [expletive] I do!’

Over the course of her relatively brief but illustrious career, Kate Winslet has amassed five Academy Award nominations — supporting for Sense and Sensibility (1995), lead for Titanic (1997), supporting for Iris (2001), lead for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), and lead for Little Children (2006) — but, believe it or not, she has never gone home with an Oscar!

This year, Kate the Great has two opportunities to correct the record: She stars in The Reader and Revolutionary Road. Based on her track record, chances are she’ll be nominated for at least one performance, and possibly both (one in lead, one in supporting). If this proves to be the case, and she again goes home empty-handed, Winslet will either tie or surpass the late Deborah Kerr (six) as the losing-est actress in Oscars history.

This background makes it all the more fun to read Krista Smith’s profile of Winslet in the December edition of Vanity Fair. During the interview that shaped the piece, Smith apparently asked Winslet whether all of the attention surrounding her big year has made her particularly hungry for an Oscar this time around. Winslet’s response? Priceless.

“Do I want it? You bet your [expletive] [expletive] I do! I think that people assume that I don’t care or don’t want it or don’t need it or something. It’s hard to be there five times, and I’m only human, you know?”

Nice to see a little fire in the belly! Now will someone get this woman an Oscar?!

Kate Winslet: Not airbrushed this time

A day after Kate Winslet said in a Vanity Fair interview she still feels like the “fat kid,” critics in Britain, her home country, are lining up to claim she still is, People magazine reports.

But the svelte five-time Oscar nominee isn’t having it: “Kate is furious at suggestions that her body has been airbrushed,” her rep told People.

The closest scrutiny comes from the Daily Mail, which engaged an airbrush artist to perform an autopsy on Winslet, who was shot wearing heels, black stockings and nothing else.

“She is in terrific shape and what you see is how she looks or she would never have agreed to pose for those shots,” her rep added.

In 2003 Britain’s GQ magazine – a stablemate of Vanity Fair – ran digitally “slimmed” photos of Winslet that drew much criticism. Within days Winslet apologized. “I just didn’t want people to think I was a hypocrite and that I’d suddenly lost 30 pounds or whatever,” she said then. “So I just came out and said, ‘Look, I don’t look like that.'”
