Kate Winslet has spoken for the first time of her divorce from Sam Mendes, and of her battle to rebuild her life.
Looking sultry with a Sixties edge in a glamorous photo shoot, the Oscar-winning actress told how she coped with the sadness by “soldiering on” — but that she now feels as if she is at the beginning of a “new narrative”.
Winslet, 35, parted from the Reading-born stage and film director last year after seven years of marriage. They have a two-year-old son Joe, and Winslet said that although it had been “hard”, they were focusing on raising him together.
The British star, who also has a 10-year-old daughter, Mia, from her first marriage to director and writer Jim Threapleton, told Harper’s Bazaar UK: “One thing I will say about me and Sam is that it’s fine, it’s really fine. I’m not going to shit-fling, there’s no point in even going there. It is what it is.
“We’re grown-ups at the end of the day, and however hard it’s been for me, it’s been equally hard for him. And we have a child together who we both love – and raising him together, jointly and without any conflict, is absolutely key. It’s the only way to do it, and I’ve really learned that with Mia.”

Kate Winslet has told friends her new man Ned Rocknroll is “The One”.
The star, 35, is “madly in love” with Richard Branson’s nephew and wants to set up home with him, a pal revealed.
The pair spent the weekend at Ned’s aunt’s house in Chichester, West Sussex.
A source said: “They have really fallen for each other. They are even mentioning marriage.”
Married Ned, 33 — born Abel Smith — has rejected a US job offer to be near twice-wed Kate after they got close on Branson’s holiday isle Necker in August.
He is separated from his wife Eliza.

Some of the biggest stars in Hollywood are now finding a way to update some of their own favorite literature, and it simply has to do with lending their voices.
For their new line of upcoming audiobooks, Audible.com has announced that some of the following celebrities have offered up their voices to bring new life to some books that many mainstream audiences have abandoned over the years. For example, Nicole Kidman (who played Virginia Woolf in The Hours) will be reading the Woolf classic To The Lighthouse, while Kim Basinger is set to tackle the Kate Chopin classic The Awakening.
The first one of these new audiobooks will be released by the site early next year, and some of the other celebrities who are taking part include the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Kate Winslet, Meg Ryan, Naomi Watts, Colin Firth, and Dustin Hoffman. There are a number of Oscar nominations and trophies within this list, and the ultimate goal here is that it leads to an increased awareness in classic literature beyond just adaptations for the big screen.
As for what some of these stars are up to when it comes to their acting work, you can see Kate Winslet in Contagion, which is currently in theaters. Meanwhile, Hathaway has been busy shooting The Dark Knight Rises for much of the past several months.

A showdown between two kids: about eleven, in a local playground. Swollen lips, broken teeth… Now the parents of the “victim” have invited the parents of the “bully” to their apartment to sort if out. Cordial banter gradually develops a razor-sharp edge as all four parents reveal their laughable contradictions and grotesque prejudices. None of them will escape the ensuing carnage. Carnage, which runs at 79 minutes since it plays out in real time, is directed by Roman Polanski, it’s based on Yasmina Reza’s Tony-winning play God Of Carnage. The two sets of parents in question are portrayed by Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz. The film is set for release December 16th.
What was it about Carnage that sparked your interest? You’ve worked on a number of films based around family.
Kate Winslet: I suppose when you are I parent, and you come from a very big, very close family like I do, I think it’s just apart of your emotional makeup. I suppose I have found myself subconsciously drawn to these types of stories that include everybody, they include every family member, they include the complexities of a family dynamic, especially involving children. Being a parent myself I’m familiar with school playground politics and how complex that can be — and sometimes how ridiculous that can be, and funny. So when Roman approached me about being involved in God Of Carnage, first of all when Roman Polanski asks you to join him on any project you really don’t say no. The script was so extraordinary, I had seen the play in New York so I was already very much a fan of the piece. I just felt extremely fortunate to be included.
