Kate Winslet and Idris Elba circling roles in All The Old Knives

A few years back, Neil Burger was attached to direct an adaptation of Olen Steinhauser’s novel All The Old Knives, but the project went off the radar with no progression.

It is now popping back up, this time with a pair of major names in Kate Winslet and Idris Elba being seriously looked at for roles.

Since no details of the film are known, below is a brief synopsis of the novel.

Six years ago in Vienna, terrorists took over a hundred hostages, and the rescue attempt went terribly wrong. The CIA’s Vienna station gathered intel during those tense hours, assimilating facts from the ground and from an agent on the inside. So when it all went wrong, the question had to be asked: Had their agent been compromised, and how?

Two of the CIA’s case officers in Vienna, Henry Pelham and Celia Harrison, were lovers at the time, and on the night of the hostage crisis Celia decided she’d had enough. She left the agency, married and had children, and now lives in idyllic Carmel-by-the-Sea. Henry is still a case officer in Vienna, and has traveled to California to see her one more time, to relive the past, maybe, or to put it behind him once and for all.

But neither of them can forget that long-ago question: Had their agent been compromised? If so, how? Each also wonders what role tonight’s dinner companion might have played in the way the tragedy unfolded six years ago.

It is also being reported that neither star will sign on unless the other one does. If that should happen, production should begin soon.

Australian Academy Awards: Kate Winslet Sends DIY Best Actress Acceptance Speech Via Phone

Kate Winslet is ordinarily a dab hand at acceptance speeches having picked up numerous gongs over the years, but even the pros have to phone it in sometimes, but never literally.

The Oscar-winning English actress took a rather unusual DIY approach to her acceptance speech after winning best actress for The Dressmaker at the annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, recording herself on the phone back home in England.

In the self deprecating two and a half minute speech, Winslet acknowledged it took her six takes to film her speech, after she realised she had a hole in her sweater on the fifth take. Ironic, given she won the award for her role as Aussie couturier Tilly Dunnage in Jocelyn Moorhouse’s The Dressmaker.

She begrudgingly put on lipstick and described herself as “lame” and “lazy” for not making the trip to Sydney to the awards ceremony held on Dec 9. She said she did not expect to win as she believed the best actor nod should “go to a local”.

While she gave serious thanks to cast and crew for her award, including co-star and best supporting actress winner Judy Davis, who she called “more inspiring than I think I could have ever imagined or hoped you would be”, she positively gushed about co-star Liam Hemsworth.

“Lovely Liam Hemsworth, I do have to mention him, even though he’s really, really famous and probably doesn’t need more people talking about how gorgeous he is,” said Winslet.

She added: “But I am going to have to talk about him because he is really, really gorgeous and we were very lucky to have him.”

While Winslet’s DIY speech didn’t make the broadcast cut, you can see the video below.
