More “Mildred Pierce” cast details

HBO’s miniseries adaptation of Mildred Pierce has added several actors, including True Blood‘s Evan Rachel Wood, Guy Pearce and Oscar nominee Melissa Leo.

Brian F. O’Byrne (FlashForward) and James LeGros have also joined the project, which will star Kate Winslet. The adaptation of James M. Cain’s novel follows the title character (Winslet) as she attempts to make a better life for herself and win the love of her ungrateful daughter in Depression-era Los Angeles.

Wood, who next stars in the Robert Redford-directed The Conspirator, will play Mildred’s daughter Veda — which will require her to play younger, Winslet to play older, or both, as in real life Wood is only 12 years younger than Winslet.

Pearce (Memento, The Hurt Locker) will play Mildred’s wealthy lover, while Leo (Frozen River, Treme) will play her close friend. O’Byrne will be the husband Mildred leaves behind, and LeGros (Mercy) will play Pearce‘s business partner.

Todd Haynes (I’m Not There, Far from Heaven) will direct the miniseries and is co-writing it with Jon Raymond. Filming is set to start in the spring.

Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion” plot details revealed

I’d like to tell you that I was running through an alley with my IESB cohorts after uncovering a Golden Ticket in a Wonka Bar and we were stopped by Slugworth who gave us a classified file containing plot details from the Scott Z. Burns penned script Contagion. That isn’t what happened, but we’ll go with that to establish some street cred for IESB.

To referesh your memory, Contagion is about a killer virus outbreak that spans the globe. If you remember this script was one of the hottest topics in the screenwriting world in February, before WB ended up with distribution and is now co-financing the project with Participant Media on a budget of 60 million.

The Scott Z. Burns penned script already has Steven Soderbergh attached to direct along with an all star cast including: Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Laurence Fishburne, and Jude Law. Law just recently came out and discussed his character with Coming Soon, “I play a kind of unbridled blogger who’s a sort of scaremonger,” IESB can confirm that the character’s name is “Krumweide” and he has quite an obsession with conspiracy theories.

We have been told by our good friend “Slugworth” that the story throws you right into the very early stages of this killer virus. Here is his breakdown that he wrote for us on the back of my Wonka’s Whipple Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight wrapper.

Kate Winslet’s salivating at the thought of judging on “Top Chef”

Padma Lakshmi’s pregnancy threw a wrench into “Top Chef” season seven plans. “We were supposed to shoot in January, but we pushed it to April 5 because of her baby,” Tom Colicchio said last night at the Bravo upfront party.

But perhaps their pregnant pause was for the best — especially since it gives Kate Winslet ample time to find time in her schedule to appear on the show! “I met Kate Winslet at a party the other night, and she said, ‘I want to come on the show,'” Tom told PopWrap. “So I said, ‘Kate, you’ve got an Oscar in your hands, you can do whatever you want!'”

Should the Emmy nominated show — which is headed to a brand new city for its seventh season — snag Kate, it will be the first Oscar winner, and arguably the most famous face, to belly up to Judges Table.

But Ms. Winslet has big shoes to fill, the last time Hollywood broke break with “Top Chef,” Natalie Portman delivered one of the most memorable meals in show history! “I was shocked at what actually made it on the air,” Tom said of the double entendre-tastic outing.

Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood join HBO’s “Mildred Pierce”

HBO’s planned five-hour miniseries remake of the classic film Mildred Pierce is off to a grand start. First, Kate Winslet signed on to star as the title character, taking over the role owned by Joan Crawford in the original 1945 picture, itself based on James M. Cain’s novel of the same name published in 1941. To direct, the network secured I’m Not There maker Todd Haynes. And now, the sure-to-be-Emmy-gold project has two more stars on board: the not-cast-enough Guy Pearce (Memento, The Hurt Locker) and Evan Rachel Wood (The Wrestler).

There’s no word yet as to which roles the two of them will play; the announcement came from Production Weekly’s Twitter yesterday. Chances are, Pearce will play Winslet’s unemployed husband, and Wood her go-getting oldest daughter Veda. The production will take place in New York from April to June.

Gwyneth Paltrow Joins Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Contagion’

Steven Soderbergh’s virus-outbreak action-thriller Contagion looks to be going from A-list casting to well, more A-list casting.

After the Scott Z. Burns script was recently prioritized over all other Soderbergh projects (Liberace for one), the film is evidently attracting major interest at the European Film Market as “several bidders have offered greenlight commitments.” A $60 million budget is already being mentioned.
