Kate Winslet: “I was in love with Guy as a teen!”

Kate Winslet is one of Britain’s most successful movie actresses, but this week the Titanic star returns to television in an epic five-part adaption of James M Cain’s novel, Mildred Pierce, on Sky Atlantic.

The drama also features former Neighbours heartthrob Guy Pearce as her new love interest Monty, and True Blood‘s Evan Rachel Wood as her snobby daughter Veda. Kate told What’s On TV what made her choose Mildred…

What attracted you to the role?
“For me the director is always a really big pull. I’ve been a fan of Todd Haynes for many years and I’d also heard many wonderful things about him from other actors who I know. I was very, very excited and flattered that someone I respected want to see me. The scripts are wonderful. I could just feel there was gravity to them as a piece and it would really be challenging for me and they’re very true to the book. Also I saw Mildred as an extraordinary mixture of vulnerability and fragility, but strength at the same time. There were many things about her that I’d never played before which I found very exciting.

“There was also size of the production, too. I wanted to get my teeth into something that’s a big script and a huge project. It’s like a five-hour movie, rather than television.”

She might have been awarded for her humanitarian work last night but Kate Winslet also got full marks in the style stakes too.

The British actress, 35, looked extremely elegant as she arrived at the Yo Dona International Awards in Madrid last night.

Kate was dressed in a floor-length black Victoria Beckham dress which boasted an embellished detail above the waist to accept her award for her humanitarian work at the award ceremony held at Palacio de Cristal de Arganzuela.

And a side view of the actress revealed she has a bottom to rival some of the celeb worlds most celebrated divas.

The actress was dressed in the simple yet stylish dress from Mrs. Beckham’s AW 2009 collection.

And her enviable figure was on display in the Lescot body skimming dress in black with a slash neck, defined shoulders, and ring embroidery waist detail.

Kate teamed the archive ensemble with a pair of Christian Louboutin heels and carried a hard clutch bag by Judith Leiber.

She finished off her look with an elegant ponytail and a pair of dangling Tiffany & Co. earrings.

As well as being awarded an award for her humanitarian efforts it was announced that the Titanic actress is also among the stars who will be awarded a star on Hollywood’s Walk Of Fame next year.

Winslet nominated for Hollywood star

Kate Winslet and Jennifer Lopez are among nominees announced to get their star on Hollywood’s storied Walk of Fame next year.

Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson will also get their names on the Hollywood Boulevard footpath in 2012, while actor Richard Burton and soul legend Barry White will get posthumous stars.

“The committee has selected a fabulous slate of stars to add sparkle and luster to the Hollywood Walk of Fame over the next year,” said John Pavlik on Tuesday, chairman of the Hollywood Walk of Fame Selection Committee.

Simpsons creator Matt Groening was also nominated, along with John Lasseter and Sumner Redstone from the film world, and musicians Boyz II Men and Ann and Nancy Wilson of the band Heart.

The selection committee is part of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the golden stars on the stretch of Hollywood Boulevard near Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the Kodak Theatre, home to the Oscars.

The nominees were chosen from hundreds of applicants considered at a June 17 meeting of the committee, whose decision was ratified by the Chamber’s board of directors.

While the nominations are for 2012, those chosen have up to five years to schedule ceremonies to unveil their stars, after which their selection will expire.

Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin to join Jason Reitman’s drama “Labor Day”

Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin have committed to star as a lost, lonesome mother and an escaped convicted murderer who takes refuge with her and her young son in Jason Reitman’s adaptation of Labor Day, EW has learned.

The drama, which is part love story, part coming-of-age tale, and part thriller, has been adapted from the 2009 novel by Joyce Maynard by Reitman. The movie will shoot in 2012 in New England.

The same year Maynard’s novel was released, the Thank You For Smoking and Juno director earned Oscar nominations for directing, producing and adapting the screenplay for Best Picture contender Up In The Air. The year before, Winslet earned a Best Actress Oscar for The Reader (after five previous nominations) while Brolin was a Best Supporting Actor contender for Milk.

This is the first time the trio is working together. Set in the early ’80s over the late summer holiday weekend, Labor Day opens with divorced, depressed single mom Adele clothes shopping with her 13-year-old son, Henry. They encounter a large, fearsome man — who also happens to be bleeding badly. He asks for a ride, and against all judgment, they give him one.

Are they hostages, accomplices… or just deluded? As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story and their options become more and more limited.

Reitman will produce the movie with partner Helen Estabrook of Right of Way films, along with Russ Smith and Lianne Halfon of Mr. Mudd productions. Steven Rales and Mark Roybal are executive producing through Indian Paintbrush.

Both actors are repped through CAA.
