It’s about time Kate Winslet wins an award!

“It’s so nice to attend an awards show and know that you’re actually going to win!”

baftas_speech.jpg

Kate Winslet, accepting her Artist of the Year award last night at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards. Clearly, Kate was joking about last award season, when she was nominated for — but didn’t win — Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for her lead role in Little Children. That’s a lot of gowns to put on for nothing. At least wearing this silver satin frock was worth it!

Don’t count Winslet out of the 2008 Oscar race. Her Oscar-winning husband, Sam Mendes, has directed Winslet for the first time in their upcoming film, Revolutionary Road (due out Dec. 19), based on a book by Richard Yates about a 1950s suburban Connecticut couple who decide to leave the consumer culture behind and move to France with their children and their problems.

In a retrospective mood last night, Winslet listed her career mentors and what they’ve taught her:

“Peter Jackson, who gave me my first job, who taught me to find my muse. Ang Lee, who taught me control. Ken Branagh, who taught me not to be afraid of Shakespeare, not completely successfully, I’m afraid. James Cameron, who taught me to be a warrior, and that’s not a joke, clearly, because none of you are laughing. Michael Apted, who taught me to hang on to my sense of humor through raging morning sickness. Richard Eyre, who taught me to be passionate and stand still at the same time. Jane Campion, who taught me how great it is to be a woman, and Michel Gondry, who taught me to try anything and risk looking stupid. Todd Field, who taught me the magic of collaboration, and Sam Mendes, who has unraveled my heart and taught me to let go.”

Kate’s Meeting Project: Accomplished

Many of you might remember our little project earlier this year that fan Janna, who also does awesome drawings of Kate, would try and give out to Kate a collage that fans over here at KWF helped get made:

Well, if you don’t remember, you can read all about it here and here.

Anyway, this is what happened, in Janna’s own words…

Well, I finally got it to Kate last night at the Britannia Awards after the show. Just wanted you to know and you can tell everyone and remind them.

After the show she was leaving the ballroom. My friends and I were waiting for her in the hotel lobby at the Century Plaza. My friends all got photos with her and I didn’t want to bother her for that, it was late and I already had one from before. So the only photo I have of her from the event is one with my friend Emily. Anyway, I gave her the second drawing I did. Just kind of haphazardly handed it to her in the middle of her taking photos with people. She paused and stared at it. She was very surprised. Bill Nighy was with her. She showed it to him and she said thank you. Then I gave her the envelope that had the collage in it. She didn’t open it right then ’cause she was leaving, but she said thank you for that as well. It was all very rushed. But I can tell you she has it, it has an index card inside crediting you personally and the website so she knows who created it for her.

All in all I was kind of in shock talking with her again and probably didn’t get all the things out that I wanted to say, but I’m happy she has her gifts!

What to say about this? Just WOW! Now we all can be sure that Kate knows we exist!!! Thank you so much, Janna! :D

Also, Janna has been lucky enough to having been able to meet Kate more than once. Click here to read her story. :)

Reese and Kate get “bawdy, tawdry and drunken”

Kate Winslet and Reese Witherspoon are neighbors and drinking buddies?

Who knew?

“I always wanted to be a European movie star, wear giant sunglasses, elaborate neck scarves, smoke hand-rolled cigarettes, and have savoir faire and gravitas,” Reese admitted onstage at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards last night.

Obviously, the perky all-American actress couldn’t become one. So she became friends with one.

“Imagine my good fortune when Kate Winslet moved into my neighborhood, rang my door bell and said, (insert British accent here) “Dahling, Sam is off shooting, and I believe our children are the same age. Could they possibly have a play date and oh, by the way, it’s almost 9 o’clock and I’ve had nothing to do drink, do you have any wine?”

BAFTA names Winslet ‘Artist of the Year’

There’s a telling moment in Little Children when Kate Winslet’s character Sarah Pierce, trapped in a loveless marriage and enmeshed in a messy affair, relates to Madame Bovary during a book club meeting with other stay-at-home moms.

“She can either choose a life of misery or struggle against it,” says Sarah. “She chooses to struggle. She fails in the end, but there’s something beautiful and even heroic in the struggle.”

Winslet’s affinity for struggling, questing characters who refuse to play by society’s rules began with her first feature, Heavenly Creatures, in which she played a murderous fantasist, and continues with her latest, the recently wrapped Revolutionary Road, in which her frustrated suburban housewife suffers from an ennui so acute that quixotic escape is the only option.

Kate’s Starry Night

Oh, what a night.

It must have been one of the most dazzlingly celeb-packed evenings in recent Hollywood history… And Kate Winslet got to bask in the actorish glory.
Brit stars and others were out in glamorous force last night at the LA Britannia Awards bash, which celebrates the creme de la creme of film and TV talent. And this year’s honorary guest was none other than our gal Kate, who scooped up a v prestigious gong for British artist of the year.
The English rose of Hollywood looked every inch a star in an exquisite gown.

Kate Winslet arrived on stunning silver form.
