Kate Winslet supported by Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio is helping pal Kate Winslet deal with her marriage breakdown, it has emerged.

DiCaprio and Winslet rose to fame playing lovers in Titanic and were reunited on screen two years ago in Revolutionary Road – directed by her husband Sam Mendes.

It has been claimed that the actress’ relationship with Mendes, 44, suffered on set and eventually led to their break-up.

The couple separated several months ago and made the split official on Monday.

However, DiCaprio has become a shoulder to cry on as cracks appeared in her six-year marriage.

“Leo and Kate have been like brother and sister since they starred in Titanic together,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“And since Kate’s marriage started to go south, around the time they were filming Revolutionary Road, they’ve got closer again. Kate has always really adored Leo and feels like she can tell him anything. They were so young when Titanic came out, so it’s fair to say they basically grew up together, professionally at least.

“They were thrust into stardom together and were the only people who knew what the other was going through. He’s been a rock for her,” the source added.

On Monday came the shock news that Kate Winslet and her husband Sam Mendes had decided to separate in a seemingly amicable split.

Numerous media reports, however, have claimed that the Oscar-winning star was growing increasingly frustrated by Sam’s friendship with Vicky Cristina Barcelona actress, Rebecca Hall.

According to the Daily Mail, 27-year-old Rebecca – daughter of theater director and founder of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Peter Hall – became a shoulder to cry on for Sam as his six-year marriage came to an end.

The pair first met in 2006 while filming Starter For 10, and worked together again last summer when Sam cast London-born Rebecca in two productions in New York and the British capital through his theater company.

The 44-year-old film maker is believed to have remained in the Big Apple following the split, while Kate has jetted to Mexico with her two children, Mia, nine, and Joe, six, and her close friend Emma Thompson.

One source close to Kate told the paper: “Rebecca is totally Sam’s type – a thespian mix of brains and beauty.”

But a friend of the director dismissed claims of a romance with the brunette talent, saying: “Sam and Rebecca are good friends, of course they are, they have been working together on the Bridge Project.

But to insinuate that there is anything further in the friendship is taking it too far.”

Meanwhile, 34-year-old Kate is said to be being helped through her current marital troubles by her long-term friend, and co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Titanic stars – who teamed up again two years ago in Revolutionary Road, the drama directed by husband Sam – became close during the filming of the 1997 blockbuster and have remained pals.

“Leo and Kate have been like brother and sister since they starred in Titanic together. And since Kate’s marriage started to go south, around the time they were filming Revolutionary Road, they’ve got closer again” a source told the Sun.

“Kate has always adored Leo and feels like she can tell him anything. They were so young when Titanic came out, they basically grew up together, professionally at least. They were thrust into stardom together and were the only people who knew what the other was going through. He has been a rock for her.”

Kate Winslet has reportedly turned to her Revolutionary Road co-star Leonardo DiCaprio for support following the breakdown of her marriage to director Sam Mendes.

Kate Winslet is being supported through her marriage break-up by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The actress turned to her Titanic co-star when problems started to surface in her relationship with director Sam Mendes as the trio worked together on 2008 movie Revolutionary Road and she is said to be relying on his support to get through this difficult time.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “Leonardo and Kate have been like brother and sister since they starred in Titanic together.

“And since Kate’s marriage problems started, around the time they were filming Revolutionary Road, they’ve got closer again. Kate feels like she can tell Leonardo anything.

“They were thrust into stardom together and were the only people who knew what the other was going through. He’s been a rock for her.”

While Kate – who is currently holidaying in Mexico with her two children, six-year-old son Joe and Mia, her nine-year-old daughter from her marriage to Jim Threapleton – has a close friendship with Leonardo, Sam’s bond with actress Rebecca Hall, 27, was reportedly the cause of many of their rows.

The director first met Rebecca in 2006 on the set of movie Starter For 10 – who he acted as executive producer on – and worked on two theatre productions, A Winter’s Tale and The Cherry Orchard, in New York and London as part of his Bridge Project theater company last summer.

A source said: “Sam is a huge admirer of Rebecca’s work. He really worked well with her. There’s no suggestion of anything untoward but undoubtedly the friendship didn’t help mend their struggling relationship.”

It has also been claimed the end of their six-year marriage came about after a row over conflicting work schedules, with 44-year-old Sam lined up to direct the new James Bond film in London and Kate, 34, planning to star in a US TV comedy show.

The source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Sam raised several questions over whether she should be doing it, insisting she was above a TV script and it wouldn’t progress her career. Not surprisingly, Kate went ballistic.”

Kate and Sam – who married in May 2003 – announced their split on Monday (15.03.10) but friends claim they have been living apart for several months.
