“Contagion” footage at CinemaCon is “Outbreak” meets “Children of Men”

We got a look at Steven Soderbergh’s new thriller Contagion while at CinemaCon, and the film seems like a mashup of Outbreak and Children of Men — which is a good combination in our book.

During CinemaCon, Warner Bros. showed off bits and pieces of their upcoming slate of films before showcasing their summer blockbusters. Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion hit the screen long enough to give us a sense of exactly what audiences are in for when this film hits theaters October 21st.

The first thoughts that went through my head after Contagion flew by in the midst of an epic sizzle reel of upcoming movies was Outbreak. One of the best viral outbreak films (zombie apocalypses excluded) in recent memory, this footage had that “government-perspective” to it. But it also showcased a Kate Winslet voiceover and some more personal images that suggest a more emotional movie. The best way to describe the footage is the fear and intensity of Outbreak mashed with the globalization and realism of Children of Men.

It was pretty epic, but felt like half a trailer. Hopefully this means a trailer is on its way, but one guarantee is that the film’s scope is huge. It was shot in Hong Kong, Minneapolis, Chicago, China, Dubai, Japan, Switzerland, The United Kingdom, Brazil, Russia and Malaysia and includes a cast of Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne and Gwyneth Paltrow. Given the recent news of Steven Soderbergh’s impending retirement from directing, he clearly isn’t going out quietly.

To recap the footage shown at CinemaCon, it was mostly quick flashes of each of the major characters in their respective elements — Jude Law in a full-body containment suit strutting down a trashed and deserted city street and Matt Damon walking around a house as if something terrifying is right around the corner.

Famous “Titanic” sketch fetches $16,000

It was one of the most sensual scenes in Titanic — Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Jack sketching a naked portrait of Kate Winslet’s Rose in the 1997 blockbuster film.

Now, that drawing has been auctioned off for a reported $16,000.

The famous picture shows Kate’s character, Rose, seductively lying on a couch wearing nothing but the iconic blue diamond necklace.

In the film, DiCaprio’s character, Jack, was the artist, but in real life, it was actually Oscar winning director James Cameron who sketched the image.

Nude Winslet “Titanic” sketch to sell at auction

The illustration of Winslet reclining on a sofa and wearing nothing but a diamond necklace is sketched by Leonardo DiCaprio’s artist character Jack Dawson in the 1997 epic film.

The movie’s director James Cameron was actually responsible for the drawing, which features the initials of DiCaprio’s character and the date April 14, 1912 — the day before the Titanic sank.

Cameron’s artwork is expected to be the star lot at Premiere Props’ memorabilia auction on Saturday and Sunday (02-03 April, 2011).

A spokesperson for the firm says, “This is a wonderful piece of memorabilia (from) one the biggest grossing films of all time.”

Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster shooting Roman Polanski’s “God of Carnage” in Paris

Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly are also among the cast members in the big-screen adaptation of the Tony-winning play.

Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly have all assembled in Paris to shoot Roman Polanski’s big-screen adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s Tony Award-winning comedy The God of Carnage.

The story follows the aftermath of a showdown between two children aged around eleven in a local playground when the parents of the victim invite those of the bully to talk it out. Carnage ensues after an initially cordial meeting turns sour.

The movie, simply entitled Carnage, stars Winslet (The Reader) and Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as husband and wife Nancy and Alan, opposite Foster and Reilly (We Need To Talk About Kevin) as Penelope and Michael, respectively.

Reza joined Polanski in adapting the play for the big screen which is set in Brooklyn. The play was originally set in Paris when it premiered back in 2006, but changed to Brooklyn when it transferred to Broadway in 2009.

Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden played the parents in the original Broadway production.

“As soon as I saw the play I thought it would make an exciting movie,“ said Polanski. “It’s a challenge to make a film in real time, without a single ellipse.”

It is being produced by Said Ben Said through SBS Productions and is set up as French-German-Polish co-production between SBS Productions, Constantin Film Produktion and SPI Poland.

ICM is repping sales of the movie in the U.S. and Canada with SBS handling international sales.

Kate Winslet to move to London with estranged husband Sam Mendes as he shoots new Bond movie

The new James Bond movie will be a family affair for Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes.

The Oscar-winning film-maker is expected to direct Daniel Craig in the latest 007 adventure some time towards the end of next year, with the production likely to be based, as usual, at Pinewood film studios.

Kate revealed that their son Joe, seven, and Kate’s daughter Mia, ten, will move to the UK with her for the period of filming.

“Sam is doing the next Bond film, all being well, and we’ll all be in England if that happens. It’s such a massive commitment for him and it’s not fair for him to commute backwards and forwards to New York from London. It would be impossible. The children will be there with me,” Kate told me exclusively.

Kate and Sam separated last year but have remained on as friendly terms as possible, primarily because of the children — and because they still like each other, despite the split.

I asked Kate if there was a small role for her in the Bond picture, perhaps as a Bond girl? She laughed and shook her head and said: “No!”

However, she did not rule out the possibility of working with Sam again. “I can see us working together again — that’s the way it is.

“We’re really good friends and have very good respect for each other. I can see it, but you’d have to ask Sam what he thinks,” Kate told me.

Sam and Bond producer Barbara Broccoli have already had many meetings over casting, and Ms. Broccoli has visited the play Deathtrap twice to see Simon Russell Beale perform.

The leading actor is an old friend of Sam’s and they’re keen to work together again.

But before filming Bond, Sam will direct Kevin Spacey in Richard III at the Old Vic in June, as part of what’s called the Bridge Project.

It will be the final production of the theatrical partnership between the Old Vic, Neal Street Productions and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Kate has one more day of shooting in Chicago on Steven Soderbergh’s film Contagion, where she is part of a team trying to control a virus outbreak.

The film is a thriller with an ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law and Marion Cotillard.

Kate has done just nine days of filming on Contagion, spread over several weeks.

However, she laughed at erroneous reports suggesting she was packing up and moving to Chicago for good.

She and her two children are moving to France for nine weeks in the New Year, to film Roman Polanski’s screen version of Yasmina Reza’s play God Of Carnage.

The movie will be set in America — but shot in France — with Kate as an upper-middle-class executive married to a lawyer (played by Christoph Waltz).

The pair clash with another couple (Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly) over a playground incident involving their children.

In March, HBO will begin showing the five-part drama Mildred Pierce, in which Kate has the title role. Sky will broadcast it in the UK in June.

The mini-series is based on the James M. Cain Depression-era novel and directed by Todd Haynes.

Kate said everything was shot earlier in the year, but she has a small amount of post-production voice work still to complete.

Kate Winslet splits from boyfriend, model Louis Dowler

The Revolutionary Road actress — who separated from her film director husband Sam Mendes in March — has reportedly called time on her romance with male model Louis Dowler after just four months of dating.

Despite being “very grateful” to the 35-year-old hunk for allowing her to get over the breakdown of her marriage, Kate is said to have ended the relationship to “concentrate on her career and children”.

A friend of the star told MailOnline: “Louis was just the tonic Kate needed after her painful split from Sam and they had a wonderful time.

However, they have realized their relationship isn’t working and Kate needs space to be on her own.

“She is very grateful to Louis for helping her pick her life back up after her marriage ended and they had a lot of fun together, but she felt it had come to an end and wants to concentrate on her career and children.”

Prior to the split, Kate — who has a six-year-old son Joe with Sam, as well as ten-year-old Mia from her first marriage to director Jim Threapleton — had reportedly been contemplating marriage with the British model.

A pal recently said: “As far as Kate is concerned, they could go all the way together — get married, have kids. She’s the happiest we’ve ever seen her, he really brings out a wonderful, carefree side to her that we haven’t seen for years.”
