Winslet’s Method Acting Struggle

KATE WINSLET was so focused on accurately portraying her character in The Reader she struggled to return to day-to-day life after filming wrapped.
The actress plays a former Nazi concentration camp guard in the post-war drama, and put all her emotions into the intense role.
And Winslet, whose performance in the film won her a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe last week (11Jan09), admits it took months for her to bid farewell to the character.
She says, “It’s like I’ve escaped from a serious car accident and need to understand what has just happened.
“When I leave a character, I have to analyse the trance through which I have just passed. It can take me several months to say goodbye to them.”
And she has credited her filmmaker husband Sam Mendes with helping her back to reality: “My husband is a fantastic support. He knows when to leave me alone with a cup of tea and a pack of cigs, and, if I break down in tears, he takes me in his arms. He knows that I have to go through all that in order to ‘come back’.”

Kate and Leo reunited for Palm Springs Film Festival

The Palm Springs International Film Festival ratcheted up its squeal factor Thursday morning by adding Kate and Leo to its awards gala.

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are teaming up for the first time since 1997’s “Titanic,” still the top box office moneymaker. Their “Revolutionary Road” is set to open in Los Angeles on Dec. 26. It is a drama about a young couple on the rocks in the 1950s, directed by Winslet’s husband Sam Mendes (“American Beauty”).

The same morning it was announced that Winslet and DiCaprio are nominated for Golden Globe awards as best actor and actress in the motion picture drama category. “Revolutionary Road” was also nominated for best film and director.

The film festival is honoring “Revolutionary Road” for its ensemble cast. Also expected to attend the awards ceremony on Jan. 6 are Kathy Bates, also of “Titanic,” Michael Shannon, Kathryn Hahn, David Harbour and Zoe Kazan, according to a film festival press release.

This is a return trip for Winslet, who attended the 2007 awards ceremony in support of her film “Little Children.”

Kate puts family first

SHE’S moved from her native Reading to New York, but actress Kate Winslet has still got her fee on the ground.

When it was suggested the 33 year old star postpone a family holiday to the Caribbean so she could promote her new movie Revolutionary Road, she declined.

The week-long trip with husband Sam Mendes and her two children threatened to clash with this month’s U.S. release of the film, directed by Mendes and reuniting her with Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.

‘Staff at distributor Paramount Vantage put out feelers that Kate and Sam might put their holiday on hold,’ I’m told.  ‘They insisted on taking the break.  But since she’s come back, Kate has promoted the film like a Trojan.’
