Winslet shuns the high life for kids

KATE WINSLET refuses to hire a nanny or a chef because she wants her children to have a normal upbringing.
The Titanic star is desperate for her kids – eight-year-old Mia from her first marriage to director Jim Threapleton, and five-year-old Joe with husband Sam Mendes – to grow up away from the movie star bubble.
And although she’s tempted to live in the lap of luxury, she is keeping it real for the sake of her children.
Winslet says, “I don’t have the perfect life. There are things I could implement within my life that would probably make it easier. But I deliberately don’t do it because if I did, I would be living that movie star existence that I really try and resist.
“I mean, it’s very tempting to have a nanny and live in a gated community and have a chef – I’d love to have a few dinners cooked for me. But I don’t want that for my children.
“When they’re older, if people say to them, ‘Did you have a chef?’ I want them to be shocked by the question.”

Kate Winslet’s break from the big screen

The 33-year-old star said: “I think I have to take a holiday. I’m sick of me and I’m sure everybody else is too!”

However Kate – whose last two movies received Academy Award nominations – admits she won’t be able to stay away from acting completely.

She revealed to Britain’s Hello! magazine: “I would love to do some theatre. It would be a good challenge. I need to keep scaring myself and that would sufficiently scare me. Maybe a musical or something completely different.”

Kate – who is married to director Sam Mendes with who she raises two children, daughter Mia, eight, and five-year-old son Joe – says she has never felt happier with her body since leaving her 20s behind.

She added: “I don’t feel self-conscious any more. I think turning 30, you’re allowed to be less obsessed with how you look. I really like being 33.

“I don’t think I look older or younger than I am. I think I look my age. Also, while I feel very joined at the hip with my family. I also feel independent. I feel like I can stand on my own two feet.”

‘Who knows how I’m holding it all together?’ asks Kate Winslet on her much-admired figure

She’s an Oscar-winning actress revered for her beauty and talent – so it comes as no surprise that Kate Winslet is happier than ever.

The British actress cites turning 30 as the landmark age she began to feel comfortable in her own skin – and admits she’s having the time of her life.

‘I’m happier about myself than I’ve ever been,’ Kate told Hello! magazine.

Kate Winslet hates short hair

Kate Winslet hated having short hair so much she insists she will never repeat the look. The 33-year-old actress sported a chin-length, textured bob at the New York premiere of her movie Hideous Kinky in 1999.

Looking at a photo taken on the night, Kate said: “Bless my heart. Well, my boobs look good. Yeah, that was my short haircut – I hated it. I would never do it again. You have to do short hair. It’s like a nightmare. It’s just not flattering to my face shape – at all.”  Kate – who raises two children with husband Sam Mendes, daughter Mia, eight, and five-year-old son Joe – is happier with the fresh-faced look she boasted at the New York premiere of 2008’s The Reader, where she had flowing blonde locks and a deep tan.

Kate told Allure magazine: “That was a damn fine look. I had just gotten back from vacation in the Turks and Caicos islands, and I was all nice and tan, and my hair had gone blonder.  “I don’t lie out in the sun, and I always wear a high sun factor, so it was from literally just wandering around in the sun for a week, chasing after the kids and making sure nobody drowned in the sea.”

Kate added the most important thing for her is that she is comfortable in what she chooses to wear, and is dressed appropriately for her age.

She favours a “relaxed” look of “clean, fresh skin” and barely-there make-up.

Haunted Setting

SOME guests at the “Away We Go” premiere party at the Jane Hotel wondered if Oscar winner Kate Winslet (there with her husband, the movie’s director, Same Mendes) was aware of the hotel’s ties to the Titanic, subject of Kate’s most famous film. The building housed and sheltered all of the ship’s survivors right after the 1912 tragedy, and a memorial service was held there at the time. Eerily, the very last Titanic survivor, Millvina Dean, passed away over the weekend. Kate had just weeks earlier contributed to fund her nursing-home bills with “Titanic” castmate Leonardo DiCaprio and their director, James Cameron.
