Oscar Winner Reactions!

Backstage, Best Actress winner Kate Winslet (The Reader) gushed, “It’s just dawning on me now that I’ve won an Oscar. It’s just starting to sink in. Oh my God…And as someone who’s been nominated before, I can tell you winning is really a lot better than losing. Really a lot better.”

When a gossip columnist insisted Winslet give an answer for who she would pass the nude-scene torch to, she took some time and then replied with a glint in her eye, “Susan Sarandon.”

‘Now I’m going to get very drunk’, says Kate Winslet as she takes Best Actress Oscar

It was a triumphant night for British film as heavily tipped Kate Winslet took the best actress Oscar for her role in The Reader, while Slumdog Millionaire swept the board with EIGHT awards this morning.

Dressed in a gunmetal grey one-shoulder gown, Reading-born Kate, 33, managed to hold back the tears as she accepted her award from a group of past winners including Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren.

In her acceptance speech, a composed Kate thanked director husband Sam Mendes, 43, and children Mia, 8, and Joe, 5, for loving her just the way she is.

And she said she planned to get ‘very drunk’.
‘You just don’t think that these dreams that seem so silly and so impossible could ever really come true’, she said backstage at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

Winkleman: ‘Leave Kate Winslet alone’

Claudia Winkleman has defended Kate Winslet following recent criticism of her behaviour at award ceremonies.

Winslet was accused of being “over the top” when she became emotional at the Golden Globes in January. The actress went home with two awards at the ceremony, winning the best drama actress gong for Revolutionary Road and the best supporting actress prize for The Reader.

Earlier this month, the star put in a more restrained performance after winning the best actress award at the BAFTAs.

Winkleman has now admitted that all eyes will be on Winslet at the Academy Awards on Sunday night. The TV host is fronting Sky’s coverage of the ceremony, which could see the star walking away with her first Oscar.

“I think everyone has been unfair. This is her moment. Leave her alone,” Winkleman told the Daily Record. “At the Golden Globes she got up and showed how much it mattered to her.

“These awards really make a difference: what house they can buy, what roles they get offered, what money they can charge for each film. If she wins, she’ll be an Academy Award winner forever so she was really moved to get a Golden Globe.

“Then she came to the BAFTAs and was restrained and people say she didn’t show much emotion. The girl can’t win.”

Kate Winslet Honors The Irish

Kate Winslet speaks during the 2009 “Oscar Wilde: Honoring The Irish In Film” Awards held at The Ebell Club on Thursday (February 19) in Los Angeles, Calif.

“I’m permanently anxious, yes,” she nodded. “Permanently anxious, very nervous and very excited,” Kate said of the anticipation of the Oscars.

“There’s no sort of magic formula,” she told the BBC. “I wish I could tell you I’ve got it down now – that I have a system that involves baths and lavender and whatever.

“But I have no plan, I have no formula. You just go with the flow.”
