Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin to join Jason Reitman’s drama “Labor Day”

Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin have committed to star as a lost, lonesome mother and an escaped convicted murderer who takes refuge with her and her young son in Jason Reitman’s adaptation of Labor Day, EW has learned.

The drama, which is part love story, part coming-of-age tale, and part thriller, has been adapted from the 2009 novel by Joyce Maynard by Reitman. The movie will shoot in 2012 in New England.

The same year Maynard’s novel was released, the Thank You For Smoking and Juno director earned Oscar nominations for directing, producing and adapting the screenplay for Best Picture contender Up In The Air. The year before, Winslet earned a Best Actress Oscar for The Reader (after five previous nominations) while Brolin was a Best Supporting Actor contender for Milk.

This is the first time the trio is working together. Set in the early ’80s over the late summer holiday weekend, Labor Day opens with divorced, depressed single mom Adele clothes shopping with her 13-year-old son, Henry. They encounter a large, fearsome man — who also happens to be bleeding badly. He asks for a ride, and against all judgment, they give him one.

Are they hostages, accomplices… or just deluded? As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story and their options become more and more limited.

Reitman will produce the movie with partner Helen Estabrook of Right of Way films, along with Russ Smith and Lianne Halfon of Mr. Mudd productions. Steven Rales and Mark Roybal are executive producing through Indian Paintbrush.

Both actors are repped through CAA.

Roman Polanski’s “Carnage” to premiere at Venice Film Festival

Roman Polanski’s film version of God Of Carnage and David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method, based on Christopher Hampton’s play The Talking Cure, will debut at the 68th Venice Film Festival, according to a report in Variety. The Festival will run August 31 – September 10.

As previously announced, Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz, and Kate Winslet star in Carnage, which focuses on two sets of parents who meet after their sons are involved in a schoolyard fight.

Cronenberg’s film, which has a screenplay by Hampton, centers on the relationship between Carl Jung (Michael Fassbinder) and Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), and features stage and screen star Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein.

Also, as previously reported, Al Pacino’s Wilde Salome will be part of the Festival, receiving a screening on September 4, the day on which the Academy, Tony and Emmy Award-winning actor is slated to receive the Jaeger-Le Coultre Glory to the Filmmaker 2011 Award.

“Titanic” to set sail again — in 3D

Remastered version to be released to coincide with 100th anniversary of launch of ship’s lone voyage

Titanic is sailing back into theaters around the world April 6, 2012.

James Cameron’s movie is getting re-released in 3D via Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment.

The date was chosen to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the ship setting sail (April 10).

The 3D conversion is being overseen by Cameron — who wrote, directed and produced the movie — and his Lightstorm producing partner Jon Landau, who also produced.

“There’s a whole generation that’s never seen Titanic as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen,” Cameron said. “And this will be Titanic as you’ve never seen it before, digitally remastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike.”
