Kate Set To Attend TIFF!

Jennifer Aniston, Kate Winslet, Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Hugh Jackman are among the A-listers heading to next month’s Toronto International Film Festival, a glitzy parade organizers touted Tuesday as ground zero for those seeking awards season glory.

Organizers say this year’s star-packed guest list also includes Sandra Bullock, Marion Cotillard, Daniel Radcliffe, Reese Witherspoon and Kristen Wiig.

But festival favourites George Clooney and Brad Pitt were noticeably absent from the announcement, despite each helming buzzy titles and having a long affiliation with the annual showcase.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs Sept. 5 to 15 and opens with the WikiLeaks drama “The Fifth Estate.”

Kate joining ‘The Dressmaker’

Kate Winslet and Judy Davis have signed on to star in the latest feature from Australian writer-director Jocelyn Moorhouse, producers Film Art Media said Thursday.

The Dressmaker, billed as a stylish drama with comic undertones, centers on Tilly Dunnage (Winslet), who returns after many years in Europe to her small Australian outback hometown with revenge on her mind.

Tilly, a talented couturier, returns to the remote country town from which she fled as a child after being accused of murder. She wants to make amends with her eccentric mother, Molly (Davis), but first must unravel the secrets of her past.

Principal photography will start Down Under in 2014.

The Dressmaker is based on the novel of the same name by Ham, which Maslin optioned four years ago.

The film will be released in Australia and New Zealand by Universal Pictures International and is being sold worldwide by U.K.-based sales agent Embankment Films and co-represented in the U.S. with CAA.

First look of Kate on ‘Labor Day’

Labor-Day

Entertainment Weekly has the first look of Kate Winslet and Josh Browling on upcoming Labor Day

The guy who is bleeding from his side needs help. But he’s not asking – he’s telling.

That’s the setup for the simmering drama Labor Day, starring Josh Brolin as an escaped convict who takes shelter with the mentally fragile, reclusive single-mom Adele (Kate Winslet) and her almost-teenage son (Changling’s Gattlin Griffith) over the course of one long late-summer holiday weekend in the mid-1980s.

Whether they are helpers or hostages is a question even in their own minds. Brolin’s Frank Chambers displays a tenderness toward the frightened mother and son, but the relentless news reports on TV describe him as dangerous — and he isn’t exactly forthcoming about what landed him in prison in the first place.

Labor Day opens in theaters Dec. 25.

First Look at Kate in Divergent!

kate-as-jeanine

As soon as director Neil Burger yells “cut!,” Winslet employs the container for another use — as a fan on the stifling set of Seventeenth Church of Christ, Scientist, which has broken air conditioners. As she flaps, she reveals that the case also disguises a baby bump — she announced in early June that she’s having her third child, the first with husband Ned Rocknroll.

“I’m holding up fine. I’m pregnant, but it’s not at the point where it becomes impossible,” says Winslet, 37, relaxing at a conference table with bags of nearly melted ice on her feet. “Sometimes you just have to roll with it.”

That’s just what Winslet does in the pivotal role of Jeanine Matthews in the film adaptation (out March 21) of the first novel in Veronica Roth’s best-selling Divergent trilogy.

Jeanine is the protector of a futuristic dystopian society based in Chicago, in which the population is divided into five factions. As the leader of the Erudite, or intelligent group, Jeanine is also the story’s antagonist.

Winslet’s character adopts a positively chilly demeanor when she meets hero Tris Prior (The Descendants’ Shailene Woodley) and her family in a scene depicting the day Tris will choose her faction.

“That’s the whole point of Jeanine,” Winslet says. “She walks down the corridor and sort of just leaves this vapor trail. I knew I had to bring that intimidation.”

The role gives the Oscar winner (best actress for 2008’s The Reader) the opportunity to play her first screen villain.

“I’m no idiot. The idea went through my head that I have never played a baddie before,” she says. “I was almost kind of surprised.”

The pregnancy helped maintain the intimidation factor, since Winslet came into the shoot late. She used that distance from her co-stars to her advantage by keeping herself slightly aloof initially.

“I wanted to break it and say, ‘It’s OK, I’m really fun. I promise.’ ” she says. “But I thought, just for today, I’d let them think that I am a complete bitch.”
