Kate Winslet’s BAFTA pledge

Mortified by headlines she received for performances at previous awards — giving ceremonies — “Get a grip, love,” “You’re embarrassing us” and “It’s celebrity big blubber” — Kate Winslet assures me there will be no theatrics from her at the BAFTAs.

“There will be no tears,” she told me at the Lancôme pre-BAFTA party in association with Harper’s Bazaar at the St. Martin’s Lane Hotel. “This year I can just relax and enjoy watching everyone else get nervous and appreciate their delight when they collect their awards.” After I disclosed in January that her husband Sam Mendes will direct the next James Bond film, I asked her if she would prefer to play the heroine or the villain. “That is a very clever question,” she laughed. “But I am not going to answer it.”

Paltrow, Fishburne Join Stellar “Contagion” Cast

Gwyneth Paltrow and Laurence Fishburne are joining the star-studded ensemble of Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion.

I try to avoid simply listing cast members of a film, but this one bears repeating: Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, and now these two. Sure, Soderbergh has put together brilliant casts before, specifically on the Ocean’s trilogy, but this mix of Hollywood talent is incredible.

According to the Playlist, most of the actors will be playing members of a medical team brought in by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) after a deadly virus outbreak. A few of them may even be hopping on planes to help other parts of the world, which fits with previous reports that the story would play out over four continents.

Deadline is reporting Warner Bros has snatched up the rights to the film and will co-finance with Participant Media on the $60 million budget. They won the bidding war over Twilight studio Summit Entertainment, among others. It was a quick acquisition since Soderbergh only recently shifted his focus to this instead of a Liberace biopic with Damon and Michael Douglas. He’s also in production on the film Knockout already about an elite black ops military team.

BAFTA preparations get under way

BAFTAs' preparation

Hollywood stars have taken to their seats early as BAFTA bosses made their preparations for the biggest night in the UK movie calendar.

Although they were not there in person, stars such as Carey Mulligan, Colin Firth, Kate Winslet and Dustin Hoffman were being afforded some of the best seats in the house.

The team behind the Orange British Academy Film Awards – taking place on Sunday – marked the stars’ places with photo mugshots on sticks.

The glamorous bash, which draws the cream of the movie world, takes place at the Royal Opera House.

British film An Education is battling major Hollywood movies Avatar and The Hurt Locker with eight nominations each at this year’s ceremony.

Vanessa Redgrave is to be presented with this year’s BAFTA Fellowship for her contribution to film.
