Flyer for casting call for Mildred Pierce

The miniseries, based on the book from 1941 by James M. Cain, tells the story of Mildred Pierce Beragon, a single mother of two daughters in the Great Depression trying to make ends meet, financially and emotionally. It will be directed by Todd Haynes, also a co-writer, who directed I’m Not There and Far from Heaven.

A feature film version of the book was produced in 1945 and starred Joan Crawford, who won an Oscar for best actress for her role as the main character.

Kate Winslet has been preparing for her role as Mildred Pierce

Kate Winslet told me she has been getting her hands dirty as she prepares to play Mildred Pierce, based strictly on the James M. Cain novel rather than the Joan Crawford movie version.

‘When you first see Mildred, she’s working in a restaurant kitchen, baking chicken pies. Then she does this for herself and runs her own business. I’ve been plucking chickens and preparing them for the pies,’ the Oscar-winning actress told me at an Orange BAFTA party hosted by Lancôme and Harper’s Bazaar at the St. Martins Lane Hotel.

‘I love doing it!’ Kate told me as she demonstrated with her hands exactly what she did to those poor old chickens.

‘It was the Depression,’ Kate explained. ‘People had to live – and eat.’

Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood will also be in the drama, which Todd Haynes will direct for America’s HBO TV.

Before shooting (and baking) begins, Kate’s heading to LA for the Oscars on March 7, where she will be a major presenter.

Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood join HBO’s “Mildred Pierce”

HBO’s planned five-hour miniseries remake of the classic film Mildred Pierce is off to a grand start. First, Kate Winslet signed on to star as the title character, taking over the role owned by Joan Crawford in the original 1945 picture, itself based on James M. Cain’s novel of the same name published in 1941. To direct, the network secured I’m Not There maker Todd Haynes. And now, the sure-to-be-Emmy-gold project has two more stars on board: the not-cast-enough Guy Pearce (Memento, The Hurt Locker) and Evan Rachel Wood (The Wrestler).

There’s no word yet as to which roles the two of them will play; the announcement came from Production Weekly’s Twitter yesterday. Chances are, Pearce will play Winslet’s unemployed husband, and Wood her go-getting oldest daughter Veda. The production will take place in New York from April to June.

Kate Winslet is returning to her television roots – she’s set to appear in a small screen version of James M. Cain’s novel “Mildred Pierce”.
The Titanic star began her acting career on British TV in the 1990s before breaking into Hollywood movies.
Now she’s returning to the small screen in a mini-series of Mildred Pierce, playing a proud single mother in Depression-era Los Angeles.
The Sopranos‘ Ilene Landress will produce the series for U.S. network HBO, while Todd Haynes and Jon Raymond are helming the script.
Joan Crawford starred in the 1945 film adaptation, which won her an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Filming on the series is due to start in New York in April (10).
