Marin Ireland draws maid service for “Mildred Pierce”

Having served as maid — and romantic rival — for Strindberg’s Miss Julie this season in Patrick Marber’s update for Broadway (After Miss Julie), Marin Ireland has signed up for another stretch of servitude, picking up after Mildred Pierce in a five-hour HBO miniseries that allows the Oscared Kate Winslet to take a whack at the long-suffering mother role that won Joan Crawford her little gold man.

“No, I’m not Veda,” she hastened to add. “Evan Rachel Wood is playing Veda so that will be exciting. I’m playing Lottie, who’s their maid-slash-assistant baker.”

It was news to her that her role was played by the daft and squeaky Butterfly McQueen (“Prissy” in Gone With the Wind), but she bounced back with panache: “I play very against type all the time so I feel this is sorta in keeping with my policy.”

Guy Pearce, Mare Winningham, James LeGros and Brian F. O’Byrne co-star in the roles originated by Zachary Scott, Eve Arden, Jack Carson and Bruce Bennett in the 1945 flick. Arden and Ann Blyth (as the problematic Veda) earned their only Oscar nominations here, supporting La Crawford. Blyth soon evolved into sweeter roles.

The miniseries remake is being directed by Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven).

Hundreds try out in Peekskill for Winslet miniseries

Acting hopefuls lined up Saturday hoping to be seen on the street with actress Kate Winslet — in the 1930s.

Next month she is coming here to film an HBO miniseries remake of Mildred Pierce that is set in that period.

While many donned period clothes, the sight of the casting location, the Paramount Center for the Arts, got professionals and amateurs in the mood.

The theater opened June 26, 1930, and shines from renovations.

From just after 8 a.m. to nearly 2 p.m. Saturday those wanting to be extras in the April 26-30 filming waited for a chance to smile briefly for a casting director.

“We’re coming to shoot in Peekskill,” said Grant Wilfley of Grant Wilfley Casting Inc. “There is wonderful architecture here … and we will need a lot of people for street scenes.”

He will need about 200 actors, though 640 men, women and children showed up. The pay is $88 a day for one or two days. Hairstylists might trim women’s hair to shoulder length and crop men’s hair to fit the style of the times, Wilfley warned. And women of that era did not have highlighted hair, so those with that current style might have to wear a hat or consent to a new color.

Some people already looked as if they had popped in from the 1930s, or thereabouts. Young boys wore knicker-length pants, women in red lipstick donned waist-hugging dresses, and men slicked back their hair and sported narrow ties and classic hats.

Kate Winslet movie parts draws hundreds to Peekskill

Would-be actors lined up along Brown Street winding around Division Street this morning hoping to be chosen as an “extra” in the upcoming HBO mini-series Mildred Pierce starring Kate Winslet in the role that won Joan Crawford a Best Actress Oscar. The story is based on the 1941 novel by James Cain.

The story takes place in the 1930s, casting director Grant Wilfley told the candidates who came to the Paramount Center for the Arts, where the casting call was held.

The movie makers expect to film in Peekskill April 26-30 and today were looking to find people to be in street scenes.

Michael Santosuso, 43, from Thornwood, was first on line. He arrived at 8:30 a.m. for the 11 a.m. start time.

“I’ve always been interested in acting, films and the arts so I thought I would try,” said the technology manager who was out of work. He said he has done some commercials and small projects. Today, he added a little extra gel to his short hair so help him look a bit more 1930-ish.

More “Mildred Pierce” cast details

HBO’s miniseries adaptation of Mildred Pierce has added several actors, including True Blood‘s Evan Rachel Wood, Guy Pearce and Oscar nominee Melissa Leo.

Brian F. O’Byrne (FlashForward) and James LeGros have also joined the project, which will star Kate Winslet. The adaptation of James M. Cain’s novel follows the title character (Winslet) as she attempts to make a better life for herself and win the love of her ungrateful daughter in Depression-era Los Angeles.

Wood, who next stars in the Robert Redford-directed The Conspirator, will play Mildred’s daughter Veda — which will require her to play younger, Winslet to play older, or both, as in real life Wood is only 12 years younger than Winslet.

Pearce (Memento, The Hurt Locker) will play Mildred’s wealthy lover, while Leo (Frozen River, Treme) will play her close friend. O’Byrne will be the husband Mildred leaves behind, and LeGros (Mercy) will play Pearce‘s business partner.

Todd Haynes (I’m Not There, Far from Heaven) will direct the miniseries and is co-writing it with Jon Raymond. Filming is set to start in the spring.
