Hundreds try out in Peekskill for Winslet miniseries

Acting hopefuls lined up Saturday hoping to be seen on the street with actress Kate Winslet — in the 1930s.

Next month she is coming here to film an HBO miniseries remake of Mildred Pierce that is set in that period.

While many donned period clothes, the sight of the casting location, the Paramount Center for the Arts, got professionals and amateurs in the mood.

The theater opened June 26, 1930, and shines from renovations.

From just after 8 a.m. to nearly 2 p.m. Saturday those wanting to be extras in the April 26-30 filming waited for a chance to smile briefly for a casting director.

“We’re coming to shoot in Peekskill,” said Grant Wilfley of Grant Wilfley Casting Inc. “There is wonderful architecture here … and we will need a lot of people for street scenes.”

He will need about 200 actors, though 640 men, women and children showed up. The pay is $88 a day for one or two days. Hairstylists might trim women’s hair to shoulder length and crop men’s hair to fit the style of the times, Wilfley warned. And women of that era did not have highlighted hair, so those with that current style might have to wear a hat or consent to a new color.

Some people already looked as if they had popped in from the 1930s, or thereabouts. Young boys wore knicker-length pants, women in red lipstick donned waist-hugging dresses, and men slicked back their hair and sported narrow ties and classic hats.

Kate Winslet movie parts draws hundreds to Peekskill

Would-be actors lined up along Brown Street winding around Division Street this morning hoping to be chosen as an “extra” in the upcoming HBO mini-series Mildred Pierce starring Kate Winslet in the role that won Joan Crawford a Best Actress Oscar. The story is based on the 1941 novel by James Cain.

The story takes place in the 1930s, casting director Grant Wilfley told the candidates who came to the Paramount Center for the Arts, where the casting call was held.

The movie makers expect to film in Peekskill April 26-30 and today were looking to find people to be in street scenes.

Michael Santosuso, 43, from Thornwood, was first on line. He arrived at 8:30 a.m. for the 11 a.m. start time.

“I’ve always been interested in acting, films and the arts so I thought I would try,” said the technology manager who was out of work. He said he has done some commercials and small projects. Today, he added a little extra gel to his short hair so help him look a bit more 1930-ish.

Kate Winslet: “I’ve had my heart broken”

She’s currently dealing with the somber fact that her marriage has fallen apart, and Kate Winslet fittingly spoke with press prior to the divorce announcement about dealing with heartbreak.

“I’m no stranger to heartbreak or rejection,” she told OK! magazine. “I’ve always been quite emotional, but when something like that happens, you have to find a way to move on.”

Splitting from Sam Mendes, her husband of seven years, Miss Winslet continued, “I went through that as a teenager. I was always falling for the wrong guy, or I was the girl who never got the guy.”

Meanwhile, insiders tell that Kate and Sam used to fight about their career paths, with a source dishing, “Sam told friends Kate would talk about the film the moment they woke up, and it was overbearing. They went stir-crazy and argued more than ever. Kate told Sam, ‘Your career is not more important than mine.'”

Sandra Bullock and Kate Winslet: Victims of Oscar curse?

Just days after last year’s Oscar winner Kate Winslet announced her split with hubby Sam Mendes comes news that the marriage of the newest champ, Sandra Bullock, may be on the rocks. In Touch Weekly reports that Bullock’s hubby, Jesse James, had an affair on the sly while Bullock was filming The Blind Side.

Now Oscarologists wonder: Is there really a kiss of death curse associated with winning best actress?

Over the past 12 years, eight of the best-actress champs busted up with their lovers after winning: Kate Winslet (won for 2008), Reese Witherspoon (2005), Hilary Swank (1999, 2005), Charlize Theron (2003), Halle Berry (2001), Julia Roberts (2000), Gwyneth Paltrow (1998), Helen Hunt (1997). Five of the splits occurred less than a year after their Oscar triumphs (Winslet from hubby Mendes, Witherspoon from hubby Ryan Phillippe, Swank from hubby Chad Lowe, Paltrow from boyfriend Ben Affleck, Roberts from boyfriend Benjamin Bratt). Berry’s break-up with Eric Benet occurred 18 months after winning; Hunt split with Hank Azaria less than two years later.

It’s ironic, looking back, at how effusively the stars gushed at the Oscar podium while thanking their men on the eve of their relationship’s end.

Kate Winslet to move back to the U.K.

Kate Winslet is reportedly packing up and moving back to the U.K. She’s lived in New York for the last seven years, but her split from husband Sam Mendes has made her want to return to England.

According to the Daily Mail, Kate is in “turmoil” over the divorce. A source close to the actress said, “Kate is in meltdown mode and doesn’t know quite what to do.”

Apparently Kate wants to be near her parents and her close friend Emma Thompson, who both live across the pond. “Kate feels she needs a support system, but she is torn because doesn’t want to disrupt her kids and is able to be very low key in New York,” continued the source.

The latest on why Sam and Kate decided to split is that he told her he didn’t think he could be with one woman for the rest of his life. A close friend of Kate’s told the Mail, “Sam had been really withdrawn and had shut himself away from her. They then had this big talk and he told her ‘people can’t be inspired by just one relationship. For me, it’s never going to be about one relationship… life is a series of relationships.’

Kate told him ‘For me it is, that’s what I want’, but Sam replied ‘Well, that’s not what I want’ and they both knew the marriage could not go on, it was hopeless. Kate did not want to break up, she had been trying her best to keep things together for months, but in the end it was just too much.”

It seems like men in the public eye lately don’t realize how lucky they are to be dating smart, beautiful women! Sam Mendes, Jesse James, and Tiger Woods should be grateful for what they had!

Kate Winslet reportedly moving back to the UK

Following the shock news of her split from husband Sam Mendes, reports are circulating that Kate Winslet may move back to the UK.

“The people she’s close to in New York are mums in schools but she thinks that will all change and her real friends — Emma Thompson, her sister Anna and her parents — are all over here,” a source tells the Daily Mail.

“Kate feels she needs a support system, but she is torn because doesn’t want to disrupt her kids and is able to be very low key in New York.” The Oscar-winner has lived in the Big Apple with her two children and husband Sam for seven years.

Meanwhile, as reports suggest Kate had become “frustrated” about the relationship between her husband and actress Rebecca Hall, a source close to Sam insists there was nothing but friendship between them.

“Sam and Rebecca are good friends, of course they are, they have spent the better part of a year working together on the Bridge Project. But to insinuate that there is anything further in the friendship is taking it too far.”
