Trivia:

After Michael Fassbender and Margot Robbie dropped out of the project, they were replaced by Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike. However, both dropped out of the project after it was put into turnaround. Idris Elba and Kate Winslet were eventually cast.

Production was delayed a few days so Kate Winslet could attend a memorial service for Alan Rickman.

Most of the filming took place in Canada, on the border of Alberta and British Columbia. Director Hany Abu-Assad has described the locations as having very cold temperatures, and tough and harsh filming conditions. Many scenes were shot on a mountaintop, and he and the crew had to drive 40 minutes before reaching the film’s base camp. If the weather was okay, they could board the helicopter to reach their destination along with their supplies.

“Dog” is played by two Yellow Labradors named Raleigh and Austin in their feature debut.

Near the end of the movie, Ben carries Alex on a makeshift sled after she walks most of the film. In the novel, the female protagonist (named Ashley instead of Alex) is carried on a makeshift sled for most of the story.

It was during this 2017 shoot on location in Vancouver that Idris Elba first met wife-to-be Sabrina Dhowre at a party.

Early on in the film, Alex asks Ben if he’s from England. This could be considered an in-joke as both Kate Winslet and Idris Elba were born in England, only about 50 miles apart.

Scott Frank did an uncredited rewrite of the script.

In the airport at the beginning of the movie, Dr. Ben Bass says he needs to attend to a patient in Baltimore. Idris Elba played Russell “Stringer” Bell in the hit show The Wire (2002), which was based in Baltimore.

The trailer was meant to release at the end of April 2017, but was delayed.

Character Quotes:

Ben Bass : If we stay here we’re safe. If we leave, search and rescue, they’re less likely to find us.
Alex Martin : Look, I don’t want to die up here because you’re too scared to take a risk. We have to do something.

Alex Martin : [to Ben] Okay. We’re down to the rule of three. We can go three weeks without food, three days without water, and three minutes without air.

Alex Martin : [to Ben] Nobody knows where we are. We’re all we’ve got, me and you! That’s it.

Alex Martin : [to Ben] We might die together and I don’t even know you.

Alex Martin : I am getting used to the cold, though.
Ben Bass : Yeah.
Alex Martin : Which is weird.
Ben Bass : Yeah, well, your body… your body’s acclimatizing. It’s quite ingenious, what God did. Your body sort of figures it out.
