Roman Polanski’s “Carnage” to open 49th Annual New York Film Festival

Roman Polanski’s Carnage will open this year’s New York Film Festival.

The film is adapted from Yasmina Reza’s 2009 Tony Award-winning play “God Of Carnage”. Shot in Paris earlier this year, it stars Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly.

It’s Polanski’s first film since being freed last year from house arrest in Switzerland. After arresting him, the Swiss government released the 77-year-old, rejecting a request to extradite him to the United States.

He still faces an Interpol warrant in effect for 188 countries for a 1977 child sex case in California.

Polanski isn’t expected to attend the New York gala.

The play “God Of Carnage” is about a degenerating evening between two couples meeting after their kids were involved in a playground fight. Like the Broadway production, the film is set in Brooklyn. The original play was in French and set in Paris.

Richard Pena, selection committee chairman and program director, calls the film “a new pinnacle” for the director. Polanski’s directorial debut, Knife In The Water, screened at the first New York Film Festival.

Carnage will first premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September. Sony Pictures Classic will release Carnage later this year.

The 49th annual New York Film festival runs Sept. 30 through Oct. 16.

Kate Winslet thrills children at Cornwall festival with a surprise book reading

She has two young children of her own so Kate Winslet knows all about the joys of story time.

So yesterday, July 24, she took time out of her busy schedule to read to children at a literary festival.

Wearing a pair of black shorts and wellingtons, the Oscar-winning actress chose the storybook “Mr. Gum” to delight a group of young children at the Port Eliot Festival in St. Germans, Cornwall.

The “Mr. Gum” books are set in the fictitious town of Lamonic Bibber and feature nine-year-old Polly her dog Jake and grumpy Mr Gum.

And the 35-year-old actress appeared to enjoying the experience as much as the children as she brought the story to life and pulled a series of faces while bringing the book to life for the enthralled audience.

The Port Eliot festival is a garden party that combines “everything from slam poetry to rock’n’roll”.

Miss Winslet used to have a house close to the north Cornish coast and is understood to be extremely fond of the county and regularly spend time there on holiday.

The actress is thought to have been taking a break in Cornwall after filming two films Movie 43 and Carnage, which was written and directed by Roman Polanski.

The Port Eliot Festival which includes music, cabaret, comedians and authors also featured writers, Hanif Kureishi and Jay McInerney and rock groups such as the Jim Jones Revue.

Kate Winslet and Louis Dowler are officially an item once again

In what I’d call a Titanic u-turn, Kate Winslet has secretly rekindled her relationship with model Louis Dowler.

The couple, both 35, dated for four months last year but split when Kate reportedly decided that she wanted to be alone.

Now relatives of the easy-on-the-eye model have confirmed the pair are back together, after they spent a romantic holiday meeting his family in Cornwall this week.

Speaking from his home in the seaside village of Lelant, near St Ives, Louis’ grandfather Jack Pearce said: “They are on holiday down here.

“He brought Kate round yesterday and it is the first time I have met her.

“We went for a pub lunch. She is a very attractive girl. She was polite and very friendly. They didn’t talk to me much about their personal life but they seemed very much together.”

Louis grew up in Penzance before becoming a professional stud model and moving to London, where he has worked for Burberry and Louis Vuitton.

He was spotted on Wednesday taking Kate along the town’s historic Chapel street. They later visited Marks & Spencer and then the local fish market. Which would have been very romantic.

His sister Natasha, who works in Specsavers in the port town, said yesterday: “They were only on holiday down here for a short while. He brought her down to meet me for lunch last Wednesday and she was lovely.”

Kate and Louis have been spotted together in New York and Edinburgh in the past two months, fueling rumors they’d rekindled their relationship.

Attempting to woo Kate back, he took her on date nights to places like London club Mahiki. No mention of a fish market though. He clearly saved the best ’til last…

Infected cities named on official poster for “Contagion”

Soderbergh has amassed an impressive cast for this viral thriller including Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, John Hawkes, Josie Ho, Demetri Martin, Jennifer Ehle, Bryan Cranston, Elliott Gould and Sanaa Lathan and one thing I didn’t know prior to seeing this poster was that the film will be shown in IMAX theaters as well.

As for the film itself, Contagion follows the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart.
