Kate Winslet wants to move out

Kate Winslet wants to move out of the New York apartment she shared with estranged husband Sam Mendes.

The 34-year-old actress is reportedly desperate to leave the $6 million property in the Chelsea district of the city because of all the memories it holds. Since Kate and Sam announced they were splitting after almost seven years of marriage, the director has been living in the same converted warehouse building as his office is based there.

“Kate really wants to leave the apartment,” a source told the New York Post newspaper. “She sees it as a house of horrors because of the fights she and Sam had there. She feels it is tainted.”

However, Kate looks set to spend several more months living in the apartment because she is due to begin filming new TV mini-series Mildred Pierce, which is based on a novel by James M. Cain in New York.

It has been claimed Kate and Sam are keen to avoid a high-profile court battle to agree on custody arrangements for the two children they raise together — six-year-old son Joe and Mia Honey, Kate’s daughter with ex-husband Jim Threapleton — and to split their shared fortune, worth an estimated $45 million.

Kate and Sam married in May 2003 on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. After announcing the split earlier this month, it emerged they had parted ways earlier in the year and had reportedly grown apart following a series of arguments.

Kate Winslet is inspired by Jodie Foster

Kate and Jodie The Oscar-winning actress was deeply affected by Jodie’s 1988 movie The Accused, in which she portrays a woman who is raped.

Jodie won a best actress Oscar for her portrayal of Sarah Tobias, and Kate says the film was what made her want to become an actress.

The Accused just completely shattered me,” she explained. “I remember watching that film and thinking, ‘Now I understand what acting is.’ I realized that acting does not really exist because you don’t act. What you do is just be. And I feel like Jodie taught me that through her work.”

Kate and Jodie first met at the 1996 Golden Globe Awards, when Kate introduced herself to Jodie. Since then, they have always made time for each other at such ceremonies, and have become friends.

Jodie respects Kate greatly, admitting she thinks she thoroughly deserved her 2008 Oscar for The Reader. “Since we first met we’ve had a couple of minutes backstage at events where we’re all dressed up and trying to get our girdles in line,” Jodie told the British edition of InStyle magazine. “But I have to say, Kate’s performance in The Reader really touched me. There was so much beauty to the character, but she also had a coarseness. As a director, I love seeing somebody on screen where I feel like I’m behind her eyes and that’s how I felt watching it.”

Hundreds try out in Peekskill for Winslet miniseries

Acting hopefuls lined up Saturday hoping to be seen on the street with actress Kate Winslet — in the 1930s.

Next month she is coming here to film an HBO miniseries remake of Mildred Pierce that is set in that period.

While many donned period clothes, the sight of the casting location, the Paramount Center for the Arts, got professionals and amateurs in the mood.

The theater opened June 26, 1930, and shines from renovations.

From just after 8 a.m. to nearly 2 p.m. Saturday those wanting to be extras in the April 26-30 filming waited for a chance to smile briefly for a casting director.

“We’re coming to shoot in Peekskill,” said Grant Wilfley of Grant Wilfley Casting Inc. “There is wonderful architecture here … and we will need a lot of people for street scenes.”

He will need about 200 actors, though 640 men, women and children showed up. The pay is $88 a day for one or two days. Hairstylists might trim women’s hair to shoulder length and crop men’s hair to fit the style of the times, Wilfley warned. And women of that era did not have highlighted hair, so those with that current style might have to wear a hat or consent to a new color.

Some people already looked as if they had popped in from the 1930s, or thereabouts. Young boys wore knicker-length pants, women in red lipstick donned waist-hugging dresses, and men slicked back their hair and sported narrow ties and classic hats.
